A good gift doesn't have to be expensive. It has to suit the person and arrive on time. This guide gives you a simple way to choose, ideas by age and budget, and a few checks so the gift doesn't disappoint when it's opened.
Start with the person, then the budget
Before you browse, write down three things: who the gift is for, what they like or need right now, and the most you want to spend. It's easier to find something that fits a clear picture than to scroll through thousands of products hoping for an idea.
- Think of what they use every day: their commute, their work, their hobby, their kitchen.
- One good item is better than several small things that won't get used.
- If you're unsure, pick something useful in their favourite colour rather than something very personal.
What your budget can do
- Under ₱300: small, useful items such as a mug, socks, a notebook set, a phone stand, snacks, or a small plant.
- ₱300 to ₱500: a tumbler, a pouch or small bag, a beauty or bath set, a toy or puzzle, or a cap.
- ₱500 to ₱1,000: a good water bottle, a shirt or slippers, a kitchen gadget, wireless earphones from a known brand, or an activity set for a child.
- ₱1,000 to ₱2,000: a bag, a small appliance, a watch, shoes, or a bigger toy.
- Above ₱2,000: think about pooling money with others for something the person really wants.
Deals around 11.11 and 12.12 can stretch the budget, but compare the sale price with what the item normally costs before you decide it's a bargain.
Ideas for children by age
- Babies and toddlers (0 to 2): soft toys, stacking or sorting toys, board books, bath toys and clothes one size up. Avoid anything with small parts.
- Preschoolers (3 to 5): pretend-play sets, big building blocks, crayons and activity books, ride-on or outdoor toys.
- Young children (6 to 9): building sets, art kits, science or STEM kits, board games, a school bag or a water bottle with their favourite character.
- Older children (10 to 12): craft kits, puzzles, sports gear, a watch, or books in a series they like.
- Teens: ask, or give a choice of a few things they might like. Earphones, a bag, a cap, skincare basics or a phone accessory are usually safe picks.
Clothes are a nice gift for children, but they grow fast. Buy one size up and check the size chart rather than the age label.
Keep toys safe
Check the age range on the box or listing, and follow it. The labels are about safety, not just about how hard the toy is.
- No toys with small parts for children under 3; they can choke on them.
- Avoid toys with loose button batteries or small powerful magnets for young children; they are dangerous if swallowed.
- Skip water beads and similar expanding toys for small children.
- Prefer sellers who show the brand and the age range clearly in the listing.
Ideas for adults
- For mom or lola: a tumbler or mug, a handy bag, a kitchen gadget, a beauty or bath set, a plant.
- For dad or lolo: a wallet, a cap, a tool set, slippers, a car or phone accessory.
- For a partner: something tied to a shared memory or hobby, a watch, a bag, or a small piece of jewelry.
- For a friend or coworker: a desk item, a tumbler, a snack box, a scented candle or a small plant.
Gifts that need an exact size, like fitted clothes or shoes, are harder to get right. If you choose one, check if the seller allows exchanges.
Exchange gifts and monito-monita
Stay close to the agreed amount. Going a little under is fine, but going far over can make others feel awkward. If there's a wish list, use it. If not, pick something most people can use: a tumbler, a pouch, a mug, a desk organiser, or a small gadget accessory.
Avoid very personal items such as perfume, underwear or clothes that need a size, unless you know the person well.
Order early and check before you wrap
- Couriers are busiest in November and December, so order gifts at least one to two weeks before you need them.
- Check the estimated delivery date at checkout, especially for items that ship from overseas.
- Open and check the item when it arrives, and keep the packaging until you're sure it works.
- Be careful with prices far below the usual price for branded items; our guide on spotting fake branded fashion explains what to look for.
This is general advice, not a recommendation of any specific product or seller. Specs, prices and rules change, so check current details with the seller or manufacturer. When you're ready, browse products.
