How to buy furniture online without regrets

Furniture is bulky, hard to return and easy to misjudge from a photo. A little preparation helps you choose something that fits, lasts and arrives in one piece.

Measure everything first

  • Measure the space where it will go, and leave room to open doors and drawers.
  • Measure the doorways, hallways, stairs and lift it must pass through.
  • Compare your measurements with the listed width, depth and height, and check whether the photo shows it assembled.

Understand the materials

Solid wood is sturdy and repairable but heavy and costly. Engineered wood such as particleboard or MDF is cheaper and lighter, but can swell if it gets wet. Metal frames are strong but can rust in damp places, and rattan or bamboo suits light use. In a humid climate, check the finish and how well the piece resists moisture.

Check strength and comfort

For beds, chairs and shelves, look for the weight capacity. For sofas and mattresses, check the thickness and the type of padding, and whether covers can be removed and washed. Photos from buyers show more about real size and quality than the shop's own pictures.

Assembly and delivery

  • Find out whether it arrives assembled or flat-packed, and whether tools and instructions are included.
  • Check who delivers large items, how much it costs and how long it takes.
  • Be home or arrange for someone to receive it, and inspect the package before signing for it.

Returns and problems

Returning furniture can be costly or impossible, so read the return and refund terms before you pay. Take photos of any damage as soon as it arrives and report it straight away, keeping the packaging until the issue is settled.

This is general advice, not a recommendation of any specific product or seller. Specs, prices and rules change, so check current details with the seller or manufacturer. When you're ready, browse products.
