How to choose a Christmas tree and lights online

A tree that doesn't fit the room or lights that don't suit the place can spoil the season. These checks help you choose decorations that look good in photos and in your home.

Measure before you buy

Measure the ceiling height and the floor space you can spare. Leave room above the tree for a topper and space around it so branches can open fully. Check whether the listed height includes the stand.

Choosing an artificial tree

  • Tip material: PVC needles are cheaper and flatter; PE (moulded) tips look more natural and usually cost more.
  • Shape: slim trees suit small rooms; full trees need more floor space.
  • Pre-lit or plain: pre-lit trees save time, but if the lights fail you may not be able to replace them, so decide whether you want to add your own.
  • Stand: a sturdy metal stand matters more than it looks, especially with pets or children.
  • Storage: check the folded size, because you will need somewhere to keep it for a year.

Choosing string lights

LED lights use less electricity and run cooler than older bulbs. Check the length and bulb count, the colour (warm white or multicolour) and whether there are modes such as steady, flashing or fading.

  • Indoor or outdoor: only use lights marked for outdoor use outside, because indoor-only strings are not designed for rain.
  • Power source: plug-in strings are brightest, battery strings are easy to place, and solar strings need daylight.
  • Plug and voltage: make sure they match your sockets.
  • Don't connect more strings together than the maker allows.

Parols, ornaments and other decorations

A parol (a Filipino star lantern) can be made of capiz shell, plastic or paper, and may use LED lights or a battery. Check the material, the size and how to hang it. If you have children or pets, consider shatterproof ornaments instead of glass.

Safety and storage

Keep lights and cables away from curtains and anything that burns easily, and don't leave them on unattended. Look for the manufacturer's safety information rather than unverified claims in the title. When you pack up, wind lights around a piece of cardboard and keep decorations in their original boxes.
