How to spot fake branded bags, shoes and clothes online

Fake designer bags, sneakers and branded clothes are common on online marketplaces, and some listings are made to look official. Counterfeits are usually lower quality, and selling them is against the law in the Philippines and against marketplace rules. These checks help you avoid paying for a fake.

Start with the price

A brand-new branded item at a fraction of its usual price is the biggest warning sign. Real sales happen, but genuine stock is rarely sold at a deep discount by an unknown shop. Compare the price with the brand's own store.

Watch the words in the listing

Sellers of fakes often use code words to avoid being reported. Be careful with listings that say "OEM", "class A", "mirror quality", "1:1", "replica" or "inspired", or that put the brand name only in the photos and not in the title.

Check the seller

  • Buy branded items from the brand's official store on the marketplace, usually marked with an official or Mall badge, or from well-known authorised retailers.
  • Look at how long the shop has been selling, its rating, and what else it sells. A shop selling many different luxury brands at low prices is a red flag.
  • Read the low-rated reviews: buyers often mention fakes there.

Look closely at the photos

Real photos of the actual item are better than stock images copied from the brand's website. Zoom in on logos, stitching, zips, buckles and labels. Uneven stitching, misspelled brand names, wrong fonts and cheap-looking hardware are common giveaways. You can ask the seller for more photos, such as the inside label or the box.

Preloved items need extra care

Second-hand designer items can be a good deal, but they are also where many fakes appear. Ask for the receipt, the original box, cards and dust bags, and check that the seller's photos match each other. For expensive pieces, consider a professional authentication service before or right after you buy.

If you think you received a fake

Check the item before you confirm that you received it, because on many marketplaces that releases your payment to the seller. Take photos, request a return or refund through the marketplace, and report the listing. Keep all the packaging until the case is settled.

This is general advice, not a recommendation of any specific product or seller. Specs, prices and rules change, so check current details with the seller or manufacturer. When you're ready, browse products.
