How to choose a hotel or place to stay

Updated October 5, 2026

A good-looking listing and a good stay are not always the same thing. A few checks before you book can save you from a bad location, hidden fees or a booking you can't cancel.

Location comes first

A cheap room far from where you will spend your days can cost more in transport and time. Look at the exact location on a map, then check how far it is from the places you plan to visit, public transport and food options. Ask whether the area feels comfortable at night, and read what recent guests say about noise.

Find the real total price

  • Check whether the price includes taxes, service charges and cleaning fees.
  • Look for fees paid at the property, such as resort or city fees.
  • Check what is included: breakfast, Wi-Fi, air conditioning and parking.
  • Compare the final price for your dates on at least two sites, and on the property's own website.

Read cancellation terms carefully

Non-refundable rates are cheaper but leave you stuck if plans change. A free-cancellation rate costs a little more, and it is worth it when your plans are uncertain. Write down the cancellation deadline and the time zone it uses.

Read reviews with a critical eye

  • Sort by most recent, because conditions change when management or maintenance changes.
  • Read the low and middling reviews to see what the problems are, and whether they repeat.
  • Look at guests' own photos, not just the professional ones.
  • Be cautious if almost every review is five stars and written in the same style.

Before you confirm

Check the check-in and check-out times, any deposit required on arrival, and whether the room type matches the number of guests. After you book, keep the confirmation and consider sending the property a short message to confirm it has your reservation, especially for small guesthouses and private rentals.

This is general advice, not a recommendation of any specific product. Specs, prices and rules change, so check current details with the seller or manufacturer.
