How to avoid travel booking scams
Updated October 5, 2026
Travel is a favourite target for scammers because the bookings are large and time-sensitive. Most scams can be avoided with a few habits you can apply to any booking.
Check that the website is the real one
- Type the airline's or hotel's address yourself, or use their official app, instead of clicking an ad.
- Look closely at the spelling of the web address. Fake sites often change one letter.
- Be careful with the first search results; some are paid ads, and fake sites can appear among them.
Be wary of deals that look too good
A far-below-market fare, or a hotel at a fraction of the normal price with pressure to pay quickly, is a warning sign. Compare it with prices on other sites before you decide, and don't let a countdown timer rush you.
Pay safely
- Pay through the booking site's official checkout.
- Avoid bank transfers or messaging-app payments to individuals or unknown companies.
- A credit card often has dispute protection, which can help if something goes wrong.
- Never share one-time passwords (OTPs) or card security codes by chat or phone.
Confirm your booking directly
After booking, look up your reservation with the airline or hotel using the booking reference, on their official website or app. If they can't find it, contact the booking site straight away. Keep screenshots of the confirmation, the price and the cancellation terms.
Watch out for fake customer service
Scammers post fake support numbers and social media accounts. Get contact details from the official website, not from a search result, a comment or a message that finds you first. If someone contacts you about a problem with your booking and asks for payment or codes, stop and check with the company directly.
Consider travel insurance
Travel insurance can cover cancellations, medical costs and lost baggage, depending on the policy. Read what is and is not covered, and compare policies before you buy.
This is general advice, not a recommendation of any specific product. Specs, prices and rules change, so check current details with the seller or manufacturer.
